The figure of the Bodhidharma “returning to India with just a single straw sandal” is a favourite subject of the artists of Shiwan because of the simplicity in moulding the figure’s clothes. The Bodhidharma wore a mantle that covered much of his body, making it unnecessary to sculpture his ears, hands, and feet. Despite their simplicity however, the statues of Bodhidharma are very much welcomed. For this reason, the Macao Museum of Art keeps a number of them in its collection.
