彌勒佛是三世佛中的未來佛，本是佛陀釋迦牟尼的弟子，入滅後居於兜率天，等候成佛。傳統的彌勒造像，身穿菩薩裝，載天冠；流行於中國的大肚彌勒，形像是根據五代一位僧人而塑造，此和尚化緣時常攜大布袋，人稱＂布袋和尚＂。

The Maitreya Buddha is the future Buddha among the three generations of the Buddha. He is one of the disciples of Buddha Sakyamuni, now residing in the Tusita Heaven. Traditionally he is presented in the attire of a Bodhisattva wearing a heavenly crown. His popular representation in China as the big-belly Buddha is based on the image of a monk from the Five Dynasties, known as the “monk holding a bag”.
