有一個叫竺道生的人，他信仰佛教，對佛家的道理頗有精深的研究。有一天，他獨自一個人跑到虎丘的深山里去，找到了許多大石頭，把它們一塊一塊整整齊齊地排列在一起。當作徒弟看待。他每天從早到晚，對頭石頭不厭其煩地給它們講解涅槃經。奇怪得很，不久，那一塊大石頭聽了竺道生講的道理時，卻個個點起頭來。
